About the election
When does the election take place?
The direct mayoral election is on Sunday, 13 September 2026 – at the same time as the Lower Saxony local elections. The polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What happens if no one achieves a majority?
If no candidate receives more than half of the votes in the first round, there will be a runoff between the two top-placed candidates on 27 September 2026.
Who is eligible to vote?
In the local elections in Lower Saxony, all Germans as well as EU citizens aged 16 and over with their main residence in Delmenhorst are eligible to vote.
How can I vote by postal vote?
You apply for the postal vote documents at the City of Delmenhorst – online, in writing or in person. You will find deadlines and forms on the official election page of the City of Delmenhorst.
What is elected besides the Mayor?
In the local elections, the city council and the local councils are also elected. The direct mayoral election decides who heads the city administration.

Who is Alexander Mittag?
Alexander Mittag (born 1987, born and raised in Delmenhorst) is an administrative civil servant, a member of the Delmenhorst city council since 2016 and chairman of the SPD council group. On 25 October 2025 he was unanimously nominated by the SPD Delmenhorst as candidate for Mayor.
What are his priorities?
Documented priorities are a bold economic policy, a liveable city for all generations, school development, affordable housing, the protection of social institutions, a more modern administration and more green spaces. More on this under "Priorities".
What other offices does he hold?
Alexander Mittag is chairman of the SPD council group in Delmenhorst and chairman of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Delmenhorst GmbH. Professionally he is an administrative civil servant with the State of Lower Saxony.

Which topics shape urban development in Delmenhorst?
